Pyin Oo Lwin, formerly known as Maymyo named by the British after Colonel May, is a popular scenic hill station, over 1000 metres above sea-level, located in the Shan Highland, some 67 kilometers (42 mi) east of Mandalay. It is well known for its colonial style houses with large compound and pine trees, eucalyptus and silver-oak abound in town. This one-time British hill town hideaway, about two hours drive from Mandalay, offers cool weather, eclectic architecture and period stagecoaches.
